Haha - I feel your pain. I think someone should start up a fund for poor amateur photographers in need of equipment. Macro photography is amazing though. I hope you are able to purchase a good lens soon and take amazing pictures. BTW, I see you own the EOS 30D. I've been going back and forth between that DSLR and the XTI as a starter camera. Have any opinions on that? IMHO, the 30D seems to be the better bargain.
Yes, I own the 30D and LOVE it. I purchased it last year from Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl) and haven't looked back. I considered purchasing the XTi as well, and another friend encouraged me to purchase the 30D because it was the better deal and I believe the technology is a bit better. They're both very similar, but I think the 30D eeks out a little further than the XTi.
I hope this helps; I'm not the best at explaining such things! Heh. One website I have found to be useful and accurate in their review of lenses and cameras is The Digital Picture: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/
I definitely recommend reading and checking out the reviews. Very beneficial.
